Review: Self-made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J.…
“Hair can be freedom or bondage” “Self-Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker” Netflix, 2020. Octavia Spencer was superb in the portrayal of Sarah Breedlove also known as Madam C.J. Walker; the first self-made female millionaire in the United States. Protagonist Addie Munroe (Carmen Ejogo), a questionable husband acted by Blair Underwood, and a free spirited daughter Lelia acted by Tiffany Haddish, at times contributed to minor setbacks, but the Madam found a way to succeed. From St. Louis to Indianapolis to New York, Madam C.J. Walker made noise in the haircare and beauty industry. Refusing to allow anything to hold her back, Madam C.J. Walker was determined.
Madam C.J. Walker dropped gems throughout the four episode limited miniseries like “Always make your own money”, “God helps those who helps themselves”, “Dreams are God’s way of showing us his plans”, and “Never run back to what broke you” “Self-Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker” Netflix, 2020. Furthermore, The series included cameos from Bill Bellamy as Sweetness, J. Alphonse Nicholson as John Robinson, Kevin Carroll as Freeman Ransom, and Garret Morris as Mr. Cleophus. The miniseries left me inspired. The story displayed the importance of female entrepreneurship. At any rate, resilience and grit are common themes throughout. A self-made business woman and philanthropist, the legacy of Madam C.J. Walker lives on. The rated TV-MA series, written by Nicole Jefferson Asher, produced by LeBron James, with addition writing and producing credits among others. This miniseries was released on March 20, 2020 and is currently still on Netflix.
